DeTomaso Appearance
Carradine's character drives a black TransAm, but there's a
rather sinister cartoonish character, a German driver, who drives a yellow "L"
model Pantera.
There are several great scenes of this car absolutely hauling butt across
the country.

watching!
The Pantera appears to be a stock yellow "L" with original Arrivas. There's
a very nice 3/4 shot the first time you see it about 10 minutes into the
movie. And there are quite a few shots of it being flogged around downtown
Californiaville. While just out into the country there's a shot of it flying
past a Vette at about Mach 3. Then, there's a really nice dogfight between
the Pantera and Carradine's TransAm with slides, etc.
I don't remember why, but a bomb is placed in the car, and later in the film
the German gets pulled over by the cops, waits for them to stop, then blasts
off up the highway. There are a few shots of him weaving around the road at
155mph, then an aerial shot of CABOOOM! Viewers are treated to the gruesome sight of an honest-to-God
for-real Pantera being blown to bits for America's entertainment.
I know, it's criminal. But at the time, Hollywood wasn't sensitive to these
issues. Remember the Elvis flick, "Viva Las Vegas" in which several
beautiful Ferraris and other exotic sports cars are purposely crashed and
destroyed? That one brings more than a few tears to my eyes too.

Summary
David Carradine survives all the dirty tactics
of rival drivers in this story of a road race from Los Angeles to New York.
The film has a full complement of car crashes.Assorted ruthless people leave
patches of rubber across the country competing for grand prize in less than
legal auto race. Not top drawer New World but nonetheless a cult fave.
Inferior to Bartel's previous cult classic, "Death Race 2000." Most
interesting for plethora of cult cameos, including Scorsese, Dante, and
grand-master Corman.
