CHiPs Television Series

DeTomaso Appearance

One of the stock shots from the TV series "CHiPs" (you know, the generic two or three second shots they keep on file, and show between scenes to 'set the stage' and transition between scenes) is a static camera placed in the center divider in a freeway, filming on-coming traffic. A silver Pantera GTS comes racing up in the fast lane and zooms past.

Also, there is one episode, right after the credits, when they are riding down the freeway talking (anyone who has ridden much at all knows this is nearly impossible at speed), there is a silver or black Pantera is following them . It shows up at numerous angles (side, front, side) and lasts for maybe 20 seconds.

If you have any screen captures of the Pantera, please forward them to me to post here. Thanks.

Summary

Where did they film all those chase scenes?
Most of the big car-wreck and chase scenes were filmed on two stretches of freeway not yet in operation. The first few seasons, they were building the I-210 out in the San Fernando Valley and so they used that stretch a lot. In the last few seasons, the I-210 link had already been opened, so they moved to the Long Beach end of the I-710 freeway (I-710 was CA-7 back then), where they were building about a 2-mile stretch.

Where did they film the scenes for Central?
Some of the scenes were shot at the actual CHP Central underneath the Santa Monica Freeway. If you're in the area, the officers inside will give you a guided tour of headquarters, including the briefing room. Be sure to call ahead.

Other scenes were shot in a Hollywood studio which was built as an exact replica of the building.
The actual address of the building is:
777 W. Washington Blvd.
Los Angeles 90015-4113
