Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo

Other Panteras in the Movies

HERBIE GOES TO MONTE CARLO

DeTomaso Appearance

At least three different Panteras are featured throughout the race scenes in the movie. But alas, the poor Pantera is no match for the mighty Herbie. Lots of fun watching all the other vintage sports cars race too.

Images

A Black pre-L wears #66 and has an interesting paint scheme - horizontal stripes on the rear deck fins and two stripes on top of the rear deck lid on either side of the center ridge. This car is the most prominently featured Pantera in the movie.

A Green Pre-L wears #10 and has yellow stripes on the front fenders. This car only appears a couple of times through the movie.

A Brown Pre-L wears #11 and is shown only a few times throughout the movie.

A Red Pre-L wears #30 and is shown only a few times.

Summary

After a twelve year absence Jim Douglas makes a return to the racetrack, entering Herbie in the Paris-to-Monte Carlo race. But there Herbie falls in love with another car. Meanwhile thieves have hidden a stolen diamond inside Herbie’s petrol tank and are determined to get it back at all costs. After an international spy ring hides a priceless gem in Herbie's gas tank, the exciting race is on. To further complicate matters, Herbie falls in love with a sleek, sporty Lancia. Can lovable Herbie win the race and save the day by foiling the crooks?

This was the third of the Herbie films, following The Love Bug (1969) and Herbie Rides Again (1974) and was the last worthwhile entry before the series went downhill with the insipid Herbie Goes Bananas (1980) and the mercifully short-lived Herbie the Love Bug TV series (1981). This entry brings back Dean Jones from the first film, who was absent in the second. It takes its cue from the inspired slapstick that made the previous entry, Herbie Rides Again, the highlight of the series. The main gimmick this time around is having Herbie fall in love. It’s a much slighter effort than Rides Again, but there are some charmingly dippy sight gags with the two cars flirting and romancing together around the streets of Paris.
