Emergency Hood Release Cable Installation
The day after I bought the Banzai Runner, I
drove over to Chuck Melton's house to show him the car. He quickly pointed
out that it didn't have the Auxiliary Hood Release. He also explained what
kind of damage would need to be done in order to get the hood open when
(note that I did not say "if") the 31 year old factory
cable breaks.
I reviewed TSB 09-64, "Front Hood Emergency
Release Cable," for details on the
procedure and made a trip to my local Kragen Auto Parts and Home Depot
stores.

Supplies
-
Kragen Auto Parts
- 1 pkg Assorted Rubber Grommets
-
Home Depot
- 1 package of Steel Rings (2 per pkg.)
- 2 feet of Steel Cable - small guage.
- 4 Cable Clamps to secure cable to release
mechanism and steel rings.

Installation Steps
I studied the TSB for the correct location of
the hole to be drilled in the front trunk. I then inspected the area under
the dash to make certain I had the necessary access and clearance where I
intended to drill the hole, and
wouldn't be drilling into a wiring harness. The TSB calls for a 5/16" hole
to be drilled, but I used a smaller bit matched to one of the smallest
grommets included in the package from Kragen.
-
Inspect under dash for clearance where you
intend to drill
-
Drill the required hole
-
Insert the appropriate size rubber grommet
-
Anchor cable to the trunk release mechanism
with cable clamps
-
Insert cable through the grommet into
passenger compartment
-
Secure cable to the steel ring from under the
dash
-
Test auxiliary release mechanism - Success!
-
Cut off excess cable
