Tune-up (partial)

Partial Tune-up

I performed a partial tune up as the first step in a complete tune up of the Banzai Runner. The partial tune up consisted of the following:

  • NGK V-Power Sparkplugs (6630 UR4)

  • MSD 3138 Helicore 8mm Sparkplug Wires

  • K&N E-3743 Universal Air Filter (14" diameter x 3" high)

  • Oil change with 7 Qts. Castrol GTX 10-40

  • Fram Toughgard Oil Filter

I found the easiest way to change the plugs is to jack-up the back end of the car, remove both rear wheels, and change the plugs through the wheel-wells. There are a couple of plugs on the passenger side of the car that were easier to change from underneath the car because they were difficult if not impossible to reach through the wheel well.

As far as changing the plug wires, that was easiest to do while sitting in the engine compartment. Be sure to bring a thick towel or rubber pad to sit on. When I bought the Banzai Runner it came with a nice looking wire loom for the plug wires that routed them along the base of the valve covers. However I found that I could not remove the distributor cap to check or set the points because the wires were too tight. You can see in the picture above that I did not clamp the wires back into the looms for this very reason. At this point, the car still had the stock dual-point distributor, and the points needed frequent filing to keep the car running well (every 1000 miles on average). This is not an easy task in the Pantera because the distributor is at the front of the engine.
